How this calculator works

A pool holds its water-surface area times its average depth. The surface area comes from the shape, and the average depth is either a single figure you enter or the mean of a shallow end and a deep end:

surface area = length × width             (rectangle)
             = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²        (round)
             = π ÷ 4 × long × short       (oval)
             = 0.45 × (wide + narrow) × length   (kidney / free-form)
average depth = (shallow + deep) ÷ 2      (for an evenly sloping floor)
volume (m³)  = surface area × average depth
US gallons   = volume m³ × 264.17
litres       = volume m³ × 1000

Pick the shape that matches your pool - rectangle, round, oval or kidney / free-form. For an above-ground pool, which is almost always a round or oval with the same depth all over, choose that shape and use the average depth (the water line is usually about 6 inches below the top rail, not the full wall height).

For a pool whose floor slopes evenly between the two ends, the average of the shallow and deep depths is exact. If the deep end is a localised diving hollow rather than an even slope, the real average is slightly less, so the sloping-floor figure errs on the safe side.

If your pool has a full-length step, a sun ledge or a bench, tick “Add a step, bench or ledge” and enter its length, width and height off the floor. The calculator removes that solid box of water from the volume - a full-length side step can be 5 to 8% of a pool, which is worth taking out before you dose chemicals.

Worked example

This example follows the unit system you pick in the calculator above.

A rectangular 8 × 4 m pool that slopes from a 1 m shallow end to a 2 m deep end:

  1. Surface area: 8 × 4 = 32 m².
  2. Average depth: (1 + 2) ÷ 2 = 1.5 m for an evenly sloping floor.
  3. Volume: 32 × 1.5 = 48 m³.
  4. In litres: 48 × 1000 = 48,000 litres.
  5. In US gallons: 48 × 264.17 = about 12,680 US gallons (roughly 10,560 imperial gallons).

Why the volume matters

The pool volume is the number nearly every other pool job keys off:

  • Chemicals. Chlorine, acid, salt and algaecide are all dosed per 1,000 litres or per 10,000 gallons, so a wrong volume means a wrong dose.
  • Filling. It sets how long the hose runs or how much a tanker delivery costs.
  • Heating. Heater and heat-pump sizing is driven by the volume of water you are warming.
  • Pump and filter turnover. Sizing the pump to turn the water over in a set number of hours starts from the volume.

Tips for measuring a pool

  • Measure the water surface, not the coping or the deck - the volume is the water, not the shell.
  • For an irregular or kidney shape, break it into a rectangle plus a round or oval end, work each out, and add them; the square footage calculator helps with the surface area.
  • Take the average depth at a few points if the floor is dished or stepped, rather than just the shallow and deep ends.
  • A vinyl-liner pool measures to the liner; a tiled pool measures to the tile face - the difference is small but real on a big pool.
  • Round your final order of water and chemicals up, not down - it is easier to top up than to drain and re-balance.

Pool volume where you are

In Canada, pool volume is usually quoted in litres (gallons still common in the trade). Canadian pools are sized in litres, though stores still convert from both US gallons (3.785 L) and imperial gallons (4.546 L), so check which gallon a product means before dosing. How do I calculate the volume of my pool?

Multiply the water-surface area by the average depth. My pool has a shallow end and a deep end - what depth do I use?

For a floor that slopes evenly from one end to the other, the average depth is simply the shallow depth plus the deep depth, divided by two. A pool that runs from 1 m at the shallow end to 2 m at the deep end averages 1.5 m. Pick "Shallow + deep ends" above and enter both, and the calculator uses that average. If the deep end is a small diving hollow rather than an even slope, the true average is a little less, so treat the slope figure as a safe over-estimate.

How do I work out a round or oval pool's volume?

A round pool's surface area is pi times the radius squared, where the radius is half the diameter - so a 7 m round pool is pi times 3.5² = about 38.5 m². Multiply by the average depth (say 1.2 m) for roughly 46 m³, about 46,000 litres. An oval uses pi divided by 4 times the long axis times the short axis. Choose the shape above and the calculator applies the right formula, so you only enter the measurements.

How do I work out a kidney or free-form pool's volume?

A kidney or free-form pool uses a trade approximation: surface area is 0.45 times the sum of the two widths (the widest part of each curved end) times the overall length. Multiply that by the average depth for the volume. So a kidney pool with a 4 m wide lobe, a 3 m narrow lobe and a 8 m length is 0.45 times 7 times 8 = 25.2 m² of surface, and at 1.5 m average depth that is about 37.8 m³, or roughly 9,980 US gallons. Choose "Kidney / free-form" above and enter the three measurements. For a very irregular shape, break it into a rectangle plus a round or oval end instead.

How do I calculate an above-ground pool's volume?

An above-ground pool is almost always a round or oval with the same depth across the whole floor, so pick that shape and use a single average depth. The key catch is the water depth: the water line usually sits about 15 cm below the top rail, so a 1.3 m wall holds roughly 1.15 m of water, not the full 1.3 m. A 7 m round pool filled to about 1.2 m holds roughly 46,000 litres. Measure the actual water depth for the most accurate figure.

Does a step, bench or sun ledge change the pool volume?

Yes, a bit. A raised shelf displaces water, so the pool holds less than the plain length-times-width-times-depth figure. A full-length step down one side of a rectangular pool typically removes about 5 to 8% of the volume - for a 8 by 4 m pool that can be over 3,000 litres. Tick "Add a step, bench or ledge" and enter the step length, width and how high it sits off the floor; the calculator subtracts that box. For a small corner bench you can usually ignore it and let the round-up cover it.

US gallons or imperial gallons - which should I use?

They are different volumes: a US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres, so the same pool is a smaller number of imperial gallons. In the US, pools and chemical labels use US gallons. Older UK, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand usage was imperial gallons, but litres is now standard in those countries. The calculator shows litres, US gallons and imperial gallons side by side, so match the figure to whatever your test kit and chemicals are calibrated in.

How long does it take to fill a pool?

A single garden hose runs at roughly 34 litres (about 9 US gallons) a minute, so a 45,000 litre pool takes around 22 hours of continuous filling. Flow varies a lot with hose diameter, length and water pressure, and two hoses roughly halve the time, so treat the calculator's fill-time figure as a ballpark. For a large pool it is often cheaper and faster to order a water-tanker delivery than to run the hose for a day or two.

How much chlorine does my pool need?

Sanitiser is dosed against the water volume, which is why the litre or gallon figure matters. Most guidance keeps free chlorine in the 1 to 3 ppm band for a home pool. The amount of product to add for a given ppm rise depends on the volume and the product strength, so once you know your pool's volume, follow the dose-per-1,000-litres or dose-per-10,000-gallons figure on the chemical label, or your local pool-water guidance, rather than a one-size-fits-all scoop.
