How to Test Your Water Pressure and Flow

Every sprinkler design starts with two numbers: your water pressure and your flow. Here is how to test each - a gauge for static pressure, a bucket test for GPM - how they differ, and how to use them.

Flow is the foundation of any sprinkler design. It decides how many heads a zone can run, so before you count zones or buy a single head, measure what your supply actually delivers.

The bucket test

  1. Pick an outside tap (hose bib) - ideally the one the system will tap off.
  2. Make sure no other water is running in the house: no dishwasher, shower, washing machine.
  3. Open the tap fully and time how long it takes to fill a bucket of known size.
  4. Convert to per minute.

Test the pressure

Flow tells you how many heads a zone can run; pressure tells you how far each head throws. You need both, and pressure is the quicker test:

  1. Screw a cheap pressure gauge onto an outside tap (hose bib).
  2. With no other water running in the house, open the tap fully and read the dial.

That reading is your static water pressure - the pressure with nothing flowing. Most homes read around 40-80 psi (many plumbing codes require a pressure-reducing valve above 80 psi). Spray heads want about 30 psi (2 bar) at the head and rotors a bit more, so you need enough static pressure to cover that plus the friction losses on the way out. Very low pressure caps the throw whatever the flow; very low flow caps the head count whatever the pressure.

  • Flow (GPM / L-min) - how much water per minute. Sets how many heads a zone can run.
  • Pressure (psi / bar) - how hard it pushes. Sets how far each head throws.

Why it matters

Pipe size does not create flow - it only limits it. Your meter, service line and street pressure set the real ceiling, and the bucket test measures it directly. From there:

  • Keep about 20% as a margin so the last head on a zone still runs at pressure.
  • Divide the usable flow by the flow per head to get heads per zone.
  • Make sure the pipe is sized to carry the zone flow without losing pressure to friction.

How do I measure my water flow in GPM?

Do a bucket test: open one outside tap fully, with no other water running in the house, and time how long it takes to fill a bucket of known size. Five gallons in 30 seconds is 10 GPM; in 20 seconds it is 15 GPM. GPM = bucket gallons ÷ (seconds ÷ 60). This measured flow, not the pipe size, sets how many sprinkler heads a zone can run.

What is a good water flow for sprinklers?

Many homes deliver about 8 to 12 GPM at an outside tap, which is enough for two or three rotors or four or five spray heads per zone. Less than that just means more, smaller zones. There is no single "good" number - you design the zones around whatever you measure, keeping about 20% as a pressure margin.
