Most retaining-wall cost figures online are a single price per square foot with no working. This guide builds it the other way: list the materials, price each line, add labor, and the total falls out - so you can see what actually moves it.

A retaining wall cost is just the sum of its parts, plus labor. A single price per foot hides the things you can actually change - the block, the wall height, whether it needs an engineer. Build the list instead.

What moves the total
Three things shift a retaining-wall budget more than the length alone:
- Wall height. This is the big one. A low garden wall is a weekend of dry-stacking; a wall over about 1 to 1.2 m (3 to 4 ft) needs an engineer, a permit and geogrid, and the price per foot climbs fast. Hold the wall to the lowest height the site allows, or step it.
- The block. Plain concrete retaining block is cheapest; split-face, tumbled and large SRW units cost more. The block is the line you change most easily.
- Drainage and labor. Excavation, base prep, levelling and backfill are slow and heavy, so labor is usually the biggest discrete line. Wet ground, poor soil or tight access adds to it.
Labor, and “near me” pricing
Labor rates vary too much by region and access to quote a reliable number, which is exactly why a material list beats a single rate. Price your own blocks, caps, base and drainage gravel, then get two or three local quotes for the install. Subtract your material total from each quote and you have a clean read on what the labor is costing - a far better comparison than a generic per-foot figure.
Worked example
A 6 m long, 0.9 m high garden wall, costed from the list with your own local prices:
- Wall blocks: about 126 at 300 × 150 mm with 5% wastage.
- Cap blocks: about 21.
- Base gravel: roughly 0.3 m³ of compacted leveling-pad gravel.
- Drainage backfill: a gravel zone behind the blocks, plus a perforated drain pipe to daylight.
- Adhesive: a few tubes for the cap row.
- Multiply each by its price, then add labor if you are not building it yourself.
The point is not the numbers - it is that every line is one you can price and change. A wall twice as tall is far more than twice the cost once an engineer and geogrid are in the list.
A few tips
- Price the blocks and the drainage first; people forget the gravel and pipe behind the wall, which are not optional.
- Get the gravel amounts right before ordering - over-deep backfill quietly adds tonnes.
- Keep the wall low if you can: every course over the engineering threshold adds design, permit and geogrid cost the low wall avoids.
- Removing an old failing wall and disposing of the spoil is a real cost - factor it in if you are replacing.
