Sewer Line Replacement Cost

Two houses replace the same 40 feet of sewer pipe and one pays twice what the other does. The pipe is not the variable - what is lying on top of it is, and this guide shows you why a lawn and a driveway buy completely different jobs.

The pipe is rarely why one quote is $2,800 and another is $10,000. What is lying on top of it is. A sewer line under a lawn and a sewer line under a concrete driveway are the same pipe, the same trade and the same trench - and completely different invoices, because half the bill is putting the surface back.

What the pipe costs, per foot

Sewer work is quoted by the linear foot of pipe, and the rate is set by the method.

Note the spot repair is not priced per foot, and this is not a rounding decision. Splicing one bad section is a dig, a cut and two couplings - the plumber is charging for the hole, not for a run of pipe. Anybody quoting you a spot fix by the foot is quoting you the wrong job.

Read the per-foot table again and notice how close together the three full-length methods are. Bursting costs about 20% more per foot than trenching at the low end and the same at the high end. That is not where the money is.

Those concrete figures are the removal and the replacement - you cannot put a driveway back without first taking the broken half of it away.

And now the geometry does the work. An open cut opens a trench for the full length of the run. Pipe bursting opens two working pits, roughly 5 feet by 4 feet each. So for a 40 foot run at a 2 foot trench width:

The trench opens roughly twice the surface. Multiply that difference by the surface rate and you have the entire trenched-versus-trenchless argument - and you can see why it comes out differently in different yards.

Worked example: the same 40 feet, two front yards

A 40 foot lateral has failed. The pipe rate is the same in both houses. Take the low end of each band and compare open-cut against pipe bursting.

House A - the line runs under the lawn.

  1. Open cut: pipe 40 ft × $50 = $2,000. Surface 80 sq ft × $2 = $160. → $2,160
  2. Pipe bursting: pipe 40 ft × $60 = $2,400. Surface 39 sq ft × $2 = $78. → $2,478
  3. The trench wins. Sod is cheap, so saving 41 square feet of it saves you $82 - and the burst costs $400 more in pipe to do it.

House B - the line runs under the concrete driveway.

  1. Open cut: pipe $2,000. Surface 80 sq ft × $10 = $800. → $2,800
  2. Pipe bursting: pipe $2,400. Surface 39 sq ft × $10 = $390. → $2,790
  3. They have crossed over - and at the top of the bands the gap opens hard: at $26 per square foot the trench pays $2,080 in concrete against the burst’s $1,014, and trenchless wins by roughly $1,000.

Nothing about the pipe changed. The driveway changed. That is why the calculator makes you say what is on top of the line, and why “is trenchless cheaper?” has no answer until you do.

How the price is built

What moves the total

  • The surface above the pipe. Bigger than the choice of method, because it is the choice of method.
  • The length of the run. A house set well back from the street is buying more of everything.
  • Depth. A deeper line means more spoil out and back, more shoring, and a slower dig.
  • Whether it is the whole line or one section. Get the camera down before anyone quotes.
  • Whether the lateral crosses the street. This is the line nobody can price for you.
  • Emergency versus planned. A line replaced the day it backs up into the basement is bought at whatever the price is that day.

Where sewer quotes go wrong

  • Comparing a per-foot rate to a per-foot rate and stopping there. The pipe is roughly half the job. The quote that is cheaper per foot can lose on restoration and still look like the better deal on paper.
  • Assuming trenchless is always dearer. Per foot it is. Delivered, under concrete, it usually is not.
  • Assuming trenchless is always the answer. Under a lawn it is a premium you are paying to protect grass.
  • Taking a CIPP quote on a collapsed pipe. A liner needs a host pipe that is still structurally there. If the line has caved in, there is nothing to line.
  • Being quoted a spot repair by the foot. It is quoted by the job - $600 to $1,050.
  • Budgeting a national number for the street cut. There isn’t one. Los Angeles’ own street damage restoration fee starts around $8.24 per square foot, which is a useful anchor and nothing more. Every city sets its own, and only your city can tell you yours.
  • Skipping the camera to save $100 to $500. It is the only thing on this page that tells you which job you are actually buying.

Is trenchless sewer repair cheaper than digging?

It depends on what is lying on top of the pipe, and that is the whole decision. Trenchless costs more per foot and digs almost nothing - pipe bursting opens a launch pit and a receiving pit, and a liner needs one access point - while an open cut takes up the entire length of whatever is above the line. Under a lawn, where resodding is $2 to $4.50 per square foot, the trench wins easily. Under a concrete driveway at $10 to $26 per square foot to break out and replace, the trench has to put back around 80 square feet of concrete and the burst only about 39, and trenchless wins. The cheaper method is not a property of the method - it is a property of your yard.

What is the difference between pipe bursting and CIPP lining?

Pipe bursting pulls a cone-shaped head through the old pipe, fracturing it outward and dragging a new pipe in behind it from a launch pit to a receiving pit. It replaces the pipe, so it works on a line that has collapsed, and it can go up a size. CIPP lining pulls a resin-saturated liner through the existing pipe and cures it in place, which needs a pipe that is still structurally there to line - it is a new pipe inside the old one rather than a new pipe. Lining is the pricier of the two per foot ($90 to $250 against $60 to $200) and digs the least of anything: one access point.

Do I need to replace the whole sewer line or just the bad part?

That is what the camera inspection is for, and at $100 to $500 it is the cheapest money on this page. If one section has been crushed or a root has come through a single joint, a spot repair splices it for $600 to $1,050 - quoted by the job, not by the foot, because the plumber is charging for the dig, the cut and the couplings rather than for a run of pipe. If the line is old clay throughout and roots are in every joint, a spot repair buys you the next failure. Get the camera down there before anyone quotes a method.

Usually you do, up to the main - the lateral from the house to the sewer main is generally the homeowner's responsibility, and it commonly runs under the sidewalk and part of the street. That is where the street cut comes in, and it is the one figure the whole US cost-guide sector does not publish, because your municipality sets it.
