How Much Does a Sprinkler System Cost?

Sprinkler systems are usually priced by the zone, so the number of zones your yard needs is the biggest lever on cost. Here are typical price bands, DIY vs installed, and how to estimate yours.

A lawn sprinkler system is priced mostly by the zone, because each zone is its own valve, run of pipe and set of heads. Work out the zones first and the cost falls into place.

Typical price bands

ScopeTypical cost
Professional install, average yard$2,500 - $5,000
Professional, per zone$700 - $1,200
DIY parts, per zone$150 - $350
Drip zone (DIY parts)$80 - $200

These are indicative US figures for 2026; quotes vary widely by region, yard size, soil (trenching in rocky ground costs more) and how many heads each zone carries. Get the zone count first with the sprinkler zone calculator, then price each line locally.

What drives the cost

  • Number of zones - the single biggest factor; more zones means more valves, wire and pipe. See how many zones you need.
  • Head type - rotors cover more ground per head, so a lawn on rotors needs fewer heads than the same lawn on sprays.
  • Pipe and trenching - longer runs and harder ground cost more to dig and plumb; the right pipe size keeps it efficient without over-buying.
  • Controller and backflow - a timer, a backflow preventer (often required by code) and the wiring to each valve.
  • Drip vs spray - drip zones for beds are usually cheaper per zone than sprinkler zones.

The design - zones, spacing and pipe size - is what makes or breaks a system, so that is the part worth the most care whichever route you take.

Estimate your own

  1. Get the zone count from your yard size and head type.
  2. Multiply zones by a per-zone figure from the table for DIY or installed.
  3. Add a controller, backflow preventer and the mainline pipe to the house supply.

For the watering side once it is in, see how long to run each zone.

Frequently asked questions

01

How much does a sprinkler system cost?

Most installed in-ground systems run about $2,500 to $5,000 for an average yard, or roughly $700 to $1,200 per zone professionally. A DIY system costs far less - about $150 to $350 per zone in parts - but takes a weekend or two of trenching and plumbing. The total scales with the number of zones, so start by working out how many zones your yard needs.

02

How much does a sprinkler system cost per zone?

Professionally installed, budget about $700 to $1,200 per zone, covering the valve, the heads, the pipe and the labour to trench and connect it. DIY parts for a zone run about $150 to $350 depending on head type and pipe length. Drip zones are usually cheaper per zone than rotor or spray zones.

03

Is a DIY sprinkler system worth it?

If you are comfortable with trenching, gluing PVC or joining poly pipe, and a manifold of valves, DIY can cut the cost by half or more. The design - zones, head spacing and pipe size - is the part most worth getting right, since mistakes there waste water for years. Plan it carefully or have the design checked, then do the install yourself.
