Run time depends on how fast each head applies water, not on the zone count. Here is the precipitation-rate formula, typical times for rotors and sprays, and how to split runs on heavy soil.

How long to run a zone has nothing to do with how many zones you have - it depends on how fast that zone’s heads lay water down (its precipitation rate) and how much water you are trying to apply.

The run-time formula

precipitation rate (in/hr) = 96.3 × GPM ÷ area covered (sq ft)
run time (minutes) = (target depth ÷ precipitation rate) × 60

Lawns generally want about 1 inch (25 mm) of water a week in peak summer, from rain plus irrigation. The sprinkler zone calculator computes the precipitation rate and run time for each zone from the flow and coverage you enter.

Rotors water slowly, so they need far longer than sprays for the same depth - the whole reason the two never share a zone. Split the weekly total across two or three days rather than one long soak.

Cycle-and-soak on heavy soil

If a zone applies water faster than the soil can absorb it, the surplus pools and runs off - wasted. Compare the precipitation rate to your soil’s intake rate:

When the head rate is higher, split the run into shorter cycles a few hours apart so each soaks in before the next. The calculator does this split for you when you pick a soil type.

Adjust for the season

Plants use far less water when it is cool, so a fixed summer schedule drowns them in spring and autumn. Set the schedule for peak summer, then scale it back - roughly 60% in the shoulder seasons and much less in winter. This is exactly what a controller’s “seasonal adjust” or “water budget” percentage does.

Putting it together

  1. Get each zone’s precipitation rate and run time from the irrigation calculator.
  2. Split the weekly minutes across two or three watering days.
  3. On clay or slopes, split each run into cycle-and-soak sessions.
  4. Verify even coverage with a catch-cup test - set straight-sided cups across the zone, run it, and compare what each catches - so you can water for the average, not the driest spot.

How long should I run my sprinklers?

Long enough to apply your weekly depth at the head's precipitation rate: run time = (depth ÷ rate) × 60 minutes. Lawns need about 1 inch (25 mm) a week. Rotors apply water slowly (0.4-0.6 in/hr) so for 1 inch they need roughly 100-150 minutes total - about 50 minutes twice a week; sprays apply fast (1.3-1.8 in/hr) and need only about 35-45 minutes total, say 15-20 minutes twice a week. Split the weekly total across two or three days, not one long soak.

How many minutes should each sprinkler zone run?

Divide the target depth by the precipitation rate. For 0.5 inch per session and a spray zone at 1.5 in/hr, that is 0.5 ÷ 1.5 × 60 = 20 minutes; a rotor zone at 0.5 in/hr would need 60 minutes for the same depth. Run rotor and spray zones for different times, which is why they are never on the same valve.

Should I water in short cycles?

On clay or sloped ground, yes - cycle-and-soak. If a zone applies water faster than the soil can absorb it, the surplus runs off. Split the run time into two or three shorter cycles a few hours apart so each soaks in. Sandy soil drinks fast and rarely needs it; clay almost always does.
