How this calculator works

A lean-to roof is a single slope (a mono-pitch) that attaches to an existing building on its high side and falls to a lower outer wall or row of posts. The rafter spans the full width from the house wall to the outer wall, so the run equals that width:

run          = width, house wall to outer wall
rise         = ledger height − outer wall height
slope ratio  = rise ÷ run
rafter       = sqrt(run² + rise²) = run × sqrt(1 + slope ratio²)

Pick Shed / lean-to (single slope) as the roof type, enter the width, and set the slope the way that suits you. If you already know how high the ledger on the house sits above the outer wall, choose Rise over the run and enter that height difference as the rise; otherwise enter a x:12 pitch or an angle directly.

Lean-tos are often kept shallow to fit beneath a first-floor window, which pushes you toward a membrane or low-slope metal rather than shingles.

Worked example

A 3 m (10 ft) deep lean-to where the house ledger sits 0.75 m above a 2.4 m outer wall, with a 0.3 m overhang:

  1. Run = full width = 3 m (house wall to outer wall).
  2. Rise = ledger − outer wall = 0.75 m, so slope ratio = 0.75 ÷ 3 = 0.25 = a 3:12 pitch.
  3. Angle: atan(0.25) = 14.0°; slope factor = √(1 + 0.25²) = 1.031.
  4. Rafter: 3 × 1.031 = 3.09 m, plus a 0.31 m overhang tail = 3.40 m to cut.

Tips

  • Decide the ledger height from the pitch your covering needs and the headroom you want at the outer wall - then check it clears any window above.
  • The run is the full width; a lean-to is not halved like a gable.
  • Bolt the ledger into solid masonry or framing and flash the top junction properly against the house wall.

What is the minimum pitch for a lean-to roof?

The covering sets it, the same as any single slope. A membrane (EPDM, TPO, felt) works almost flat from about 0.5:12; standing-seam metal from 1:12 to 2:12; corrugated metal from 3:12; and shingles from 2:12 with a doubled underlayment, 4:12 as standard. Many lean-to extensions are deliberately shallow to tuck under an upstairs window, so a low-slope membrane or metal panel is often the right call. Set your slope above and the calculator names the slope class.

How do I work out a lean-to roof pitch from the wall heights?

The rise is the height of the ledger on the house wall minus the height of the outer wall (or posts); the run is the width from the house out to that wall. Choose "Rise over the run" as the pitch input, enter the height difference as the rise and the width as the run, and the calculator gives the matching x:12 pitch, the angle and the rafter length.

Is the run the full width on a lean-to roof?

Yes. A lean-to is a single slope, so each rafter runs the full width from the house wall to the outer wall - the run equals that width, not half of it. Pick the "Shed / lean-to (single slope)" roof type so the calculator does not halve your measurement.

How high does the house wall ledger need to be?

High enough to give the pitch your covering needs over the width you have, plus clearance for headroom and any door or window above. For a 3 m deep lean-to at a 2:12 pitch the ledger sits about 0.5 m above the outer wall; at 3:12 it is about 0.75 m higher. Enter the width and try a pitch above to read the rise, then check it clears your windows.

Lean-to vs shed roof - what is the difference?

The geometry is the same single slope, so the rafter math is identical. A shed roof stands on its own walls; a lean-to attaches to an existing building along its high side, usually on a ledger board bolted to the wall. Because you are working off an existing wall, you often size a lean-to from the two heights rather than a target pitch. A freestanding structure is better served by the shed roof pitch calculator.

Do I flash a lean-to roof against the house wall?

Always. Where the lean-to meets the existing wall you need step or apron flashing let into the brickwork or cladding and lapped over the roof covering, or water will track down the wall into the join. The calculator handles the geometry; the weatherproofing of that top junction is the detail to get right on site.
