Working out epoxy is the same idea as paint: measure the floor, decide how many coats, and divide by how much each kit covers. The only twist is that you buy whole kits, so the answer rounds up.

The three numbers you need

coated area = floor area × coats
kits        = round up (coated area × (1 + waste %) ÷ kit coverage)
  • Floor area - length × width of the slab. Add a section for an L-shape or an extra bay rather than averaging.
  • Coats - usually two, sometimes three with a primer.
  • Kit coverage - the area one kit covers in a single coat, straight off the label.

Measure your own slab - garages vary, and the floor is what you coat, not the outside dimensions.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 20 ft two-car garage (400 sq ft), two coats, kits that each cover 250 sq ft, with 10% waste:

  1. Coated area: 400 × 2 coats = 800 sq ft.
  2. With waste: 800 × 1.1 = 880 sq ft to cover.
  3. Kits: 880 ÷ 250 = 3.5, so buy 4 kits.
  4. Leftover: 4 kits cover 1,000 sq ft of one coat, so you have about 200 sq ft of spare coverage for touch-ups.

A few tips

  • Read the label carefully - some kits quote coverage for the whole system (all coats), others per coat. The calculator assumes per coat, so adjust if yours is stated differently.
  • Bare or porous concrete drinks the first coat, so its coverage is lower than the best-case figure on the tin - lean towards more waste.
  • Don’t run short. A part-floor left overnight between batches can show a lap line, so buy the spare kit.
  • Once you know the quantity, price it both ways in the cost guide.

How much epoxy do I need for a 2-car garage?

A two-car garage is about 400 to 500 square feet. Two coats over 400 sq ft is 800 sq ft to cover. Kits state the area they cover in one coat - a one-car kit might do around 250 sq ft, a two-car kit more - so 800 sq ft is roughly two to four kits depending on their size, plus about 10% for waste. How do I read the coverage off an epoxy kit?

The label states the area a kit covers, usually for one coat - for example "covers 36 m²" or "up to 250 sq ft". Use that figure directly. If the label gives a coverage per litre or per gallon instead, multiply it by the kit volume to get the area. Watch whether the stated coverage is for one coat or the whole system, because two coats need twice the coverage.

How many coats of epoxy does a garage floor need?

Two coats is the usual choice - a base coat and a clear or coloured topcoat - sometimes over a separate primer, which makes three. One coat alone is thin and wears through. A flake floor is a base coat, the flake broadcast into it, then one or two clear topcoats. More coats means more material, so set the coat count before you work out the kits.

How much extra epoxy should I buy for waste?

Allow about 10%, or 15% for a porous slab, unfilled joints, or a floor with lots of edges. Epoxy is mixed in batches with a short pot life, so running out mid-coat is a real problem - you cannot always match a fresh batch. Rounding up to whole kits usually gives some slack, but the waste allowance makes sure of it.
