Carpet is not cut to size off a wide bolt the way fabric is. Broadloom carpet is woven and finished at a fixed roll width, and you buy a length of that width. So the roll width is the most important number when you order: it decides whether your room is one seam-free piece or needs a second strip.

The 12 ft / 3.66 m width is the worldwide workhorse - wide enough to cover most rooms in a single piece without a seam, but still manageable to handle and fit. The 4 m and 5 m UK widths suit larger living rooms; the narrower 3 m and 4 m widths suit bedrooms and landings.
Why the width decides your seams
A room no wider than the roll is covered by one strip, with no seam. A room wider than the roll needs a second strip, and the two are joined with a seam:
strips = ceil( room width ÷ roll width )
So a 3.5 m wide bedroom takes one strip off a 3.66 m roll - seamless. A 4.2 m wide living room needs two strips off the same roll, with one seam and a part-used second strip you still pay for. Picking the roll width that just covers your widest room is how fitters avoid both extra seams and wasted offcuts.
Choosing the width
- Measure your widest room first. If a 4 m or 5 m width covers it in one piece, the seam and the offcut both disappear.
- Mind the access. A 5 m roll is heavy and hard to carry up stairs or round tight landings - sometimes two narrower drops are easier to handle even if they add a seam.
