Self-adhesive “peel-and-stick” wallpaper has made the job approachable for DIYers and renters - but it is not a straight replacement for traditional paste-up paper. Each wins in different situations.

Peel-and-stick

A self-adhesive film you position by hand - no paste, no pasting table. Strengths: easy to hang, repositionable as you go, and removable without residue on most sound painted walls, which is why renters love it. Trade-offs: it is generally less durable, can lift at the seams over time, struggles on textured walls, and the design range - while growing - is narrower than traditional paper. Always test a small patch first; it can pull paint off freshly painted or poorly bonded walls.

Traditional (paste)

The classic paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper paper. It is more durable, suits whole rooms and long-term decorating, and offers the widest range of designs and finishes (including textured and premium papers). The cost is that it needs paste, a bit of technique, and more effort to remove later.

Which to choose

  • Renting, or want a quick/changeable look: peel-and-stick, ideally on an accent wall.
  • A whole room, or a finish you want to last: traditional paste wallpaper.
  • Textured walls: traditional - peel-and-stick needs a smooth surface.

Estimating is the same for both

Both are hung in drops and have a pattern repeat, so the wallpaper calculator and the drop method apply to either - just enter the actual roll width, length and repeat for your chosen product, since peel-and-stick rolls are often sized differently. And read understanding wallpaper pattern repeat before you order, whichever you pick.

Frequently asked questions

01

Is peel-and-stick wallpaper good for renters?

Yes - it is the go-to for rentals because it removes cleanly without paste residue or damaging most painted walls, and it is repositionable as you hang it. It is ideal for accent walls and short-term decorating, though always test a small area first, as it can lift paint on poorly bonded or freshly painted surfaces.

02

Does peel-and-stick wallpaper last as long as traditional?

No. Traditional paste wallpaper is more durable and better for whole rooms and long-term use. Peel-and-stick is convenient and removable but generally less hard-wearing, can lift at seams over time, and does not adhere well to textured walls. For a forever finish in a busy room, traditional paper wins.

03

Do you estimate peel-and-stick wallpaper the same way?

Yes - both are hung in drops and have a pattern repeat, so the drop method and the wallpaper calculator apply to both. Enter the roll dimensions and pattern repeat from the specific product; peel-and-stick rolls are often a different width and length to traditional rolls, so use the actual figures on the label.
