Square Feet to Square Metres
To go from square feet to square metres, multiply by 0.0929; to go the other way, multiply by 10.764. Here is where those numbers come from, a worked example, and a conversion table both ways for common floor areas.

Square feet and square metres measure the same thing in different units, and the conversion is a single multiply each way:
square feet → square metres : × 0.0929
square metres → square feet : × 10.764
Skip the math
Enter a room once in the square footage calculator and it shows the area in square feet and square metres at the same time, so there is nothing to convert. This guide is for when you just have a number to turn around.
Where the factor comes from
One foot is exactly 0.3048 metres. Area is two-dimensional, so you square that:
1 sq ft = 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.0929 m²
1 m² = 1 ÷ 0.0929 = 10.764 sq ft
That is why the area factor (0.0929) is not the same as the length factor (0.3048) - you always square the length factor to get the area one.
Worked example
A 1,500 sq ft apartment in square metres:
1,500 × 0.0929 = 139.4 m²
And the other way, an 85 m² flat in square feet:
85 × 10.764 = 915 sq ft

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Multiply the square feet by 0.0929. So 1,000 sq ft × 0.0929 = 92.9 m². The factor is 0.3048 squared, because one foot is exactly 0.3048 metres and area scales with the square of the length.
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Multiply the square metres by 10.764. So 100 m² × 10.764 = 1,076 sq ft. That factor is just 1 divided by 0.0929, the reverse of the square-feet-to-square-metres conversion.
Why is the factor not the same as for feet to metres?
Because area is two-dimensional. One foot is 0.3048 metres, but one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.0929 square metres. You square the length factor to get the area factor. The same is true going up: 1 m² is 10.764 sq ft, which is 3.2808 squared.
How many square feet is 100 square metres?
100 square metres is about 1,076 square feet (100 × 10.764). A 100 m² apartment is a touch over 1,000 sq ft, a common mid-size two- or three-bedroom flat.
Is a square metre bigger than a square foot?
Much bigger. One square metre is about 10.8 square feet, because a metre is roughly 3.28 feet and you square that for area. So a room quoted in square metres always has a far smaller-looking number than the same room in square feet.
